2nd Chance Animal Rescue was founded in July of 2008 with little money, but huge dreams. Shannon McGinness, the founder and primary caretaker, had heard of puppymills about 7 years ago while watching a program on Animal Planet about a puppymill dog that had been rescued and brought to health and adopted to a loving home. When 2nd Chance Animal Rescue originally was founded, it was with the intentions of only taking owner surrenders and county dogs. Within 6 months of its inception, breeders from the surrounding areas in Missouri started calling wanting to either go out of business or lower their numbers to meet state requirements. 2nd Chance Animal Rescue has pulled and rescued approximately 1,000 puppymill dogs, most of whom have been transferred to other rescues and have been rehabilitated, brought to health and adopted into loving, caring homes.
Missouri has the highest population of puppymills in the United States with approximately 3,000. A measure on November's ballot would place restrictions on how breeders operate. If this measure passes, then more and more breeders would be forced out of business as the restrictions would take precedent over their profits. As a result, more dogs will need rescue.
We make absolutely no money when we pull and transfer to other rescues, with the majority of the funds coming directly out of pocket. Many of the dogs that we take into our rescue require funds for medical issues far beyond what their adoption fees are. We operate solely on adoption fees and donations. A fundraiser in Connecticut has been organized with the sole purpose to benefit these dogs and their costs so that they can be vetted and brought to health so that they can be adopted to loving and caring homes. A PayPal link has been provided on our website. Please consider donating to help these wonderful dogs that have been given a '2nd Chance'
